Jacari is a student charity operating in Bristol and Oxford which provides free home tutoring to children aged 7 – 16 who speak English as an additional language and are at risk of not achieving their fill potential.
Jacari’s aim is to improve the lives of children and young people who do not speak English as their first language, by increasing their:
Language ability and other academic skills
General confidence and motivation
Ability to engage with and contribute to school life and the wider community/society
Jacari’s student volunteers spend an hour a week helping a child with their language skills and general confidence. This one-to-one support has been proven to improve academic performance at school and raise the child’s confidence outside the classroom. Jacari also hold fun events and outings for children involved in the Jacari scheme, and within the university sphere they seek to raise awareness of the issues facing EAL families through events for students and the public.
